Useful Tips & Tricks for Beginners

Fortune isn’t everything but it sure is a lot.
Need coal, grass, hardwood, artifacts, fish or even monster drops? Go hunting for these on a day with at least Good Fortune and you will find much more success compared to days that are otherwise.
You can tell what your fortune is at the start of the day from the newspaper that is stationed right outside your doorstep. Do know that fortune for the next day is pre-determined the day before so save scumming does not work to reset it.
- Speaking of coal, tons of these can be gathered really fast on good fortune days in the meadowlands by breaking vases.
- When trying to save stamina in the early game, remember that you can use your sword to cut grass in the meadowlands as well as use it to break the vases. I have used the scythe for way too long before realizing this.
- Boberries are a free and effective way to keep your stamina topped up when exploring so kill the bush monsters whenever you run across them in the Meadowlands especially during good fortune days for a high chance of double drops of these berries. I kept a healthy stock of it and it’s basically carried me through the entire Underground and it’s good to have a lot of them since one of the Underground bundles need 100 of these.
Now where to get a sword? Michael is a travelling merchant that appears every Friday in a secret area within the grove north of Fiona’s house. There should be a trail that kinda clues you in on it’s location once you get to the grove. (just keep walking through the northern trees). He sells a lot of goodies and his stock changes every season so keep visiting him and keep checking his wares! Especially buy his flowers seeds! You will need it for a bundle later on! (Oh and bring him some Dark Apples whenever you come to visit why dontcha? He likes those!)
Close combat not your style? Then try working towards the bundle in the graveyard that unlocks the blowdart. It’s a pretty potent weapon for dealing with enemies at long range with the caveat of having to lose a bit of stamina every time you shoot it.
Shake those trees! They drop seeds that are useful for various things!
FAQ
Want to get that Greenhouse in the first year?
Get on that honey farm. This tip is more for the minmaxers that are wanting to accomplish tons of stuff in their first year. Not only does it help you towards one of the bundles but as of currently, honey will make you TONS of money. The amount you get may be patched later on but the tip still holds for people wanting to get the greenhouse unlocked ASAP.
What do I do with all these artifacts? Are they safe to sell?
Currently yes, the only thing you could do with them is to sell them. The devs have confirmed that Alice opens up something later on (not currently implemented) where she will ask for these things. I personally have FOMO so I just save 1 copy of each artifact, sorted into different chests depending on which layer I found them and just sell everything else I get.
Where do I get x building or how do I find the blueprint for x item?
Buildings can be built from Hannah and different blueprints can be bought from Tomos, Mima, Marry and Michael.
How do I get hay?
The simple answer is buy the blueprint from Mima, craft the hay maker and use both wood and grass to make hay. Alternatively, if you already have a barn/coop built alongside a silo, simply cut down some grass and some of it should turn into hay that gets automatically deposited into your silo. You can then withdraw some of the hay from within the barn/coop.
Where can I get poop?
You can get poop from your farm animals as well as the birdhouse.
What time do I pass out?
3AM
What happens when I pass out?
The only consequence right now is that you wake up with half a stamina bar the next day.
How do I progress the story?
We are now finding out that a lot of story progression is locked behind friendship levels with everyone in town so start gifting. (Another really handy guide is already posted here that has a lot of the liked gifts by everyone!)
How do I upgrade my fishing rod?
This is unlocked after fishing up a certain number of fish (I honestly dunno how much). You will get a letter from Zac in the mail notifying you that an upgraded rod is available in his shack.
Fishing Tips
- You gotta throw the bait in the water with PS4 (square) or left click with mouse on the water.
- Now to catch the fish – this is like a fast event – when the little exclamation mark is up – Click Left Click or PS4 (X) FAST.
- You control the Red Half circle by repeatedly clicking/pressing PS4 (X) or Left Click mouse – try to click it multiple times to get it to move (don’t just hold it) it falls down on it’s own.
On Xbox controller: right stick to aim, RT to cast. A to hook, and tap A to move the marker so the minus sign changes to a little fish sign.
