Weapons Guide
Weapon Explanation
Each type of soldier in Last Train Home can only use certain weapons. There are five types of soldiers and weapons:
- Riflemen use rifles
- Grenadiers use short rifles
- Scouts use sniper rifles
- Medics use handguns
- Machine Gunners use machine guns
Each weapon has three versions, ranked from basic to advanced. Better versions aren’t always the best choice. You need one weapon for each soldier you want to equip. Soldiers can learn multiple roles, but can only use one at a time.
Your team can only carry as many guns as there are soldiers, and only guns that match the soldiers’ current roles.
The melee damage stat on weapons isn’t very useful, as it doesn’t apply to special attacks that kill instantly.
Ammunition Explanation
Different weapons use different types of ammunition. This is important because some ammo is cheaper to make and sell than others. Cheaper ammo doesn’t always mean the weapon is better. There are three types of ammo:
Handgun Ammo:
- Takes up 1 space
- Worth 7 credits
- Costs 4.64 credits to make
- Used by handguns
- Best for making money when sold
Rifle Ammo:
- Takes up 2 spaces
- Worth 10 credits
- Costs 6.96 credits to make
- Used by rifles, short rifles, and sniper rifles
Machine Gun Ammo:
- Takes up 2 spaces
- Worth 13 credits
- Costs 9.28 credits to make
- Used by machine guns
Rifles
Mosin Rifle: This is the basic rifle. It’s not very good. It has average range and shooting speed, but low damage and okay accuracy. It’s one of the worst guns in the game. The low damage means you’re not getting much value when you shoot. The Rifleman can use a bayonet charge to kill enemies without using bullets, which is often better than shooting with this gun. Try not to use this gun much if you can avoid it.
Type 38 Rifle: This is the next level rifle. It’s more accurate than the Mosin, but still not great. The damage is still low. Like with the Mosin, it’s usually better to use the bayonet charge instead of shooting.
M1916 Automatic Rifle: This is the top-level rifle. It’s very different from the other two. It shoots three bullets at once, has a big 25-round magazine, shoots quickly, but is less accurate. It’s one of the best guns for open fights. It can do a lot of damage quickly and take down enemies fast. The Rifleman can still use the bayonet charge if enemies get too close. This gun is more mobile than machine guns and uses cheaper bullets. It’s still not as cost-effective as some other weapons, and it’s rare to find. If you’re trying to be stealthy, it’s still much better than the other rifles if you need to start shooting.
Short Rifles
M1903 Short Rifle: This is the basic short rifle. It’s not good at all. It’s similar to the Mosin Rifle, but even less accurate. It’s probably the worst gun in the game. The Grenadier who uses this doesn’t have a bayonet charge as a backup. Try not to use this gun if you can help it.
Karabiner Short Rifle: This is the next level short rifle. It does more damage than the M1903. It can do as much damage as the basic sniper rifles. It’s not very precise, so aim at enemies in open areas. You can get this gun early, and it’s better than the basic rifles. However, there are other guns that are more cost-effective. Only use it if you have to.
MK I Short Rifle: This is the top-level short rifle. It can hold more bullets and is slightly more accurate than the Karabiner. But it’s not much better overall. The bigger magazine is nice, but it wasn’t really a problem before. The improved accuracy helps a bit, but not a lot. By the time you can get this gun, you should have access to better weapons. Only use it if you have to. Otherwise, it’s better to rely on your Snipers, Medics, and Riflemen (with their bayonets).
Handguns
Nagant Revolver: This is the basic handgun. It shoots quickly but doesn’t do much damage per shot. It’s not very accurate. Even though each shot is weak, it can do a lot of damage quickly because it shoots so fast. It uses cheap bullets, which is good. It’s better to use this than the basic rifle or short rifle. Medics with this gun can be good fighters while Riflemen attack from the side with bayonets. The downsides are that it only holds 7 bullets and takes a while to reload. Medics with high dexterity can use handguns better.
Parabellum Pistol: This is the next level handgun. It shoots slower than the Nagant but is more accurate and does more damage per shot. It holds more bullets and reloads faster. This is one of the best guns in the game. It’s very cost-effective, doing a lot of damage with cheap bullets. It’s good for both careful players and those who like shootouts. Try to get this gun as soon as you can – it’s a great deal at 570 money.
C96 Pistol: This is the top-level handgun. It does less damage per shot than the Parabellum, but it’s more accurate and holds more bullets. Even though it’s a higher level, it’s not quite as good as the Parabellum. It can shoot accurately for a long time, but each shot isn’t as cost-effective. It’s still a very good gun and you can use it if you don’t have enough Parabellums.
Sniper Rifles
SRM1895 Sniper Rifle: This is the basic sniper rifle. It does good damage per shot and is accurate, but reloads slowly and takes a long time to aim. It’s a good starting weapon, doing the most damage per shot of all basic single-shot guns. Scouts who use this work well with Medics. Scouts can hit far-away enemies while Medics shoot closer ones. You’ll get better guns later, but this one is fine to keep using. Scouts can still kill enemies in one shot with their special ability, no matter what gun they have.
Gewehr Sniper Rifle: This is the next level sniper rifle. It can shoot farther and is more accurate than the SRM1895. It works pretty much the same way, just a bit better.
Pattern 14 Sniper Rifle: This is the top-level sniper rifle. It’s slightly less accurate but does much more damage. It might be the best gun in the game, doing the most damage per shot of any small gun. The loss in accuracy isn’t much compared to how much more damage it does. With certain special abilities, it can even hurt vehicles. It’s very good value for its bullets. It’s rare to find, so always keep at least 800 money in case you get a chance to buy one.
Machine Guns
Chauchat Machine Gun: This is the basic machine gun. It does a lot of damage quickly and can fire many shots before reloading. However, it’s not very accurate and takes a long time to reload. Machine guns are the best at doing a lot of damage quickly, even to vehicles when set up. But they use expensive bullets and often waste shots after the enemy is already down. They’re good for stopping a large group of enemies, but it might be cheaper to use other weapons to fight smaller groups instead.
Madsen Machine Gun: This is the next level machine gun. It shoots faster, is more accurate, and reloads quicker than the Chauchat. The faster shooting is both good and bad – it kills enemies faster but might waste more bullets. It’s better than the Chauchat overall, but it’s still expensive to use. Each machine gun bullet costs about the same as two handgun bullets.
Lewis Machine Gun: This is the top-level machine gun. It shoots much faster and can fire more shots before stopping. It holds more bullets but is less accurate than the Madsen. This gun isn’t as good as the Madsen. While it can shoot a lot of bullets very quickly, it wastes even more bullets than the Madsen. The Madsen could already kill many enemies and was more accurate. Don’t use this gun unless you have too much money and ammo.
