Guide to Basics
Controls
The basic controls are pretty simple:
- Use W/A/S/D to move around
- Hold Shift to run
- Press Space to attack in place
- Hit F for a heavy attack
- Press R to grab (only works for the male character). To grab, reduce the dizziness value by clicking left and right, then press R again.
- Press E to collect stuff
- Open the map with M
Use the number keys to select quick items. It’s a good idea to put the tools you use often on the left side of the toolbar.
Choosing Your Character
You can play as two different characters who share wilderness survival skills but have their own personal attributes like health, attack power, and speed. You can switch between them by talking to each other (or using a console command).
It’s best to play mostly as the male character while switching between the two. Otherwise, you might miss out on some of the story. Blue markers on the map are for events that only the male character can do, red markers are for female-only events, and green markers are for events that both characters can trigger.
Make sure to carry some flags with you so you can teleport back home and then back to where you were at any time.
The male character can grab natives by pressing R. After reducing their dizziness value, you can put them in your backpack (you can only carry a limited number, but you can increase this with skill points). Put them in a cage and give them their favorite food or tools to make them like you more and join your follower team.
The female character has special defeat events. Most humanoid creatures have their own events, and there are exclusive storylines just for the female character. It’s a good idea to make a new save before each story node, experience the defeat event, and then keep going.
Crafting
This game gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to crafting. You’ll go from living underwater to seeing the giant beasts of the Stone Age and the first humans standing upright. Now it’s time to start your biggest adventure yet, from the beginning of civilization to exploring the universe.
At first, you can only make things by hand, which are the basic survival items in the bottom left corner. Just like in other survival games, you need to unlock the furnace first, then more advanced workbenches, metal workbenches, and so on. We won’t go into too much detail about that here.
To get to a specific crafting page, just right-click on the workbench you want to use. It’s a good idea to store specific items in the corresponding workbench so they’re easy to find and use. For example, put plant materials in the plant workbench and spider silk in the spider workbench.
To get blueprints for most workbenches (except for the wood and metal ones), you’ll need to defeat certain bosses or find specific treasure chests on the map.
Followers
The two main characters can’t be each other’s followers. Usually, the character you’re not controlling will wait at the starting location (the beach). Don’t worry if they die – they’ll automatically come back to life. You can also give them weapons to defend your home.
There’s no hunger mechanic in this game. Normally, followers and the main characters will stay in one place.
After the male character captures a native, he can invite them to join his team and tell them to follow him or stay put.
Followers can only increase their individual attributes: health, attack power, and speed.
Followers can only equip certain weapons. You can see which races can use a weapon in the small text below it.
Just like with the main characters, don’t worry if followers die. As long as they’re on your team list, they won’t be gone forever (they’ll automatically revive).
Followers might get knocked out and captured. You’ll see their location on the map, and you can rescue them by defeating the boss guarding them.
Building Your Home
If you want the other main character to guard your home, you might need to build a house on the beach or use the /change command (more on that later) to switch characters and set their waiting position.
You can set followers’ activity range, work assignments (they’ll need the right tools like an axe), and combat behavior (whether they actively attack or run away from fights).
At night, followers will automatically find the nearest bed to sleep in, which makes it easy for you to get things done at home.
In the current version, the outer walls are tightly grid-aligned and generally won’t push characters out. It’s a good idea to watch which direction enemies are attacking from and add more defenses there.
Here’s an unorthodox method: Trees in this game grow fast and have no density limit. Try planting several layers of trees outside your home, leaving a gap for yourself. This works really well for blocking enemies.
The size of your house is proportional to its internal space. It’s best to build a stone house all at once. Before you start building, make sure to clean up all the branches, stones, and other stuff around the area.

How to Remove the Censorship (Delete Mosaic)
- Right-click on the game in your library, then go to Properties → Installed Files → Browse Local Files.
- This will open up the game’s directory.
- In the main game folder, look for the file called “UnityPlayer.dll”. Instead of changing the original file, just make a copy of it.
- Change the name of the new file to “none.bat”.
- If you can’t see file extensions, you might need to look up how to display them first.
The new “none.bat” file should be exactly the same as the current version of “UnityPlayer.dll”, just with a different name and extension. Keep in mind that you might have to do this again whenever the game updates (but maybe not).
- Put the new “none.bat” file in xxx\Mad Island\Mad Island_Data\StreamingAssets\XML
- When you’re done, the XML folder should look like this:

Useful Tips
How to use the perfume potion
It doesn’t work on story characters. It should work on Native Female, Native Male, and Native Girl (Girl may need a patch). To do it, talk to or select the character. When their inventory is open, right-click the item from either your inventory or theirs.
Party system explained
The Leadership skill increases party capacity using a point system. Different allies and pets that can follow you have different point values. You probably can’t have 4 followers, but 2 is possible. Female Natives cost 3 points, Big Sisters cost 4 points, and so on. You can see the costs on the character page.
Players or NPCs with “Food” as their job can fill the food box. Players can interact with the box (an “Eat” prompt should appear, and you can eat from it too) and right-click food from their inventory to add it. The number above the chest should increase, showing the amount of food in the box (up to 1000). NPCs need to be within the blue circle to use the food box. Their own territory probably also needs to overlap with the box so they can eat from it. You can craft the harvest box at the wood workbench.
To see who can equip a weapon, mouse over it in your inventory or on a workbench recipe. The top tooltip should say “Who can equip.” Yona is the Female MC, and Man is the Male MC. Other Story NPC weapons are uncommon, like Reika who can use a nail bat. Native NPCs are similar, but not as uncommon, with a few options. The “Meat workbench” should have some options for Female Natives. The same applies to clothing.
Extra tip: You can take gear from dead NPCs and sometimes bosses if you have the equipment page open and you select/interact with them. This usually works for any NPC whose body doesn’t turn into loot immediately when you click on them.
Second tip: Some NPCs allow you to craft with them. Try befriending an old man or old lady.
Crafting item locations for the meat workbench
You can find the cave while exploring the second part of the island. To get there, go north of the great wall that you can pass by beating the spider boss or Tribal Chief. There’s a small forest to the west. North of that forest is a road that should end with a cave. The middle of this small cave has a deeper cave. Look for new ore veins/nodes and small red items on the ground.
You can get the Life Orb from abortions or failing to deliver a child. The old man/grandpa native has a crafting menu where you can make a drug to use on a pregnant native.
