Mahjong Soul – Guide to Improve Your Event Skills

So you want to be an epic gamer and get the #1 winner winner chicken dinner victory royale, well I’ve got a few tips for you to improve your event skills.

How to Win

By Slime

Throw away every traditional mahjong practice you’ve learned

The skills you’ve learned from rank and jade are simply not applicable, forget about pinfu dora riichi and speed. This event and mahjong are significantly different and should be treated as a separate game

If you have played the game Balatro before, those skills are significantly more applicable in this event.

Spend your star coins wisely

After you clear a level, you are given the opportunity to upgrade your capability at the shop. There is one and only one good upgrade you should prioritize your star coins, and that is the more shuffles upgrade. If you can build a good hand before you even start drawing, you will find the game becomes significantly easier. Buy shuffle upgrade everytime you get.

Afterwards, you can spend your star coins on increasing the amount of open tiles. While not as good as the shuffle, open tiles will greatly help you by either guarantying hand progession or even a win.

Almost never spend your star coins on increasing dora, while yes more dora does sound good, it is still purely luck based and you might find the extra dora to be completely unusable in your hand. Consistency is better than lucky big hands, and buying dora upgrade is a trap.

Talismans, the good the bad and the godly

Now we’re on to the special meat and bones of this chicken dinner, the talismans. The talismans you acquire will greatly change how you play your run.

I must clarify, due to how early this event has been released, I can not give an extensive guide on every talisman. As such, I can only give recommendations based on my own experience. You may very well find a new busted talisman.

The alright: Here are your typically alright talismans, most green and a few blue talismans will be in this category. I will also mention a few gold talismans that fall here.

Flower on the peak: “After reaching tenpai, declaring kan will grant a win plus bonus han”. It is “okay” but just okay as it’s triggering condition is rather limited due to the nature of the event.

Spotted white dragon: “After reaching tenpai, any white dragon drawn will count as a winning tile” While good as a bonus, there are many other gold talismans that will signifiantly improve your run, the applicability of this talisman is situational at best, as you will likely discard many white dragons before reaching tenpai.

These gold talismans should likely be immediately refunded as soon as you hit your talisman limit

The godly: These talismans will take your run from a potential ex1 to a godly run. Aim for these talismans whenever you see them.

Courageous spirit: “After winning 4 times, multiple the han value by x1.” This talisman is one of the best for the meta in the event. Getting this early will ensure that with proper tile efficiency, the multiplier can rise to as large as a 30 time multiplier. The best part is that This is a a blue talisman, meaning that it is a very easy to get this early on.

Mahjong giftbox: “Add a fixed amount of points to your hand, multiply by x8 the amount of star coins used in the round” This one is also incredible early on, due to how many upgrades early on you will buy. Having this talisman will almost guaaentee clearing the early stages of your run.

These are only a few of the godly talismans I have seen, realistically any easily applicably han multiplication can be considered godly.

Economy Talismans: These are talismans that grant no advantage during the game, but give star coins. These are great to hoard early game, but shifted out in the mid-late game for talismans that tangibly give hand value for a better score

New game, New rules

Let’s start off with some basics. 27 tiles to draw (6 of which are visible), 13 in your hand and 1 dora indicator. Without shuffling, you will have knowledge of 20 out of 136 potential tiles. This is what the kids call cringe

Additionally, you will only have access to 40 tiles without shuffling. Seeing these numbers, one must realise how valuable the haipai shuffle really is

So let’s talk about the shuffle, the way you utilize this shuffle changes depending on your skill in the event. As such, I will be giving information based around the general knowledge of a beginner.

You should shuffle a majority of your tiles that are not well suited. All isolated guest winds terminals get the axe, penchans also unless the penchan has or is waiting for dora. You can also shuffle away kanchans depending on how valuable or usable they are.

It is important to know, there is no furiten rule. So it is okay to switch a shuffle wait back into tenpai for something you already shuffled away

Incorporate open tiles into your hand

Here is my general rule of thumb.

  • Use row 1 open tiles to progress your hand
  • Use row 2 open tiles to win off of.
  • Ignore row 3 open tiles unless you can make a big hand and your winning tile is one of them
  • Of course, the info provided by these open tiles can be treated as the same as dora indicators. The more you see, the less likely you are to draw from unknown tiles.

Almost never chiitoi

The value of chiitoi is relatively low for the event, and with the limitation that you can only have 3 potential winning tiles it becomes sub optimal.

An exception is if you have a high value hand already and are in chiitoi tenpai, and the wait is an open tile.

Note: I define high value and big hands as a hand that can one shot the point target, keep in mind that high values change depending on the round.
