Useful Tips for The Final Boss
This boss fight requires a lot of memorization, unlike other bosses where you could mostly play by instinct. Many players don’t enjoy fights that need so much memorization, which is probably why this one isn’t popular. The attack timings are very unpredictable, so you need to practice a lot to understand them. Usually, when fighting a boss, you try to win each time. But for this fight, you might need to spend some attempts just learning – like trying to block different attack combinations perfectly without worrying about dealing damage.
The only way to avoid the Talisman attack is to jump and use an air block (Tai Chi Kick or Skull Kick). In the second part of the fight, be ready for a jumping attack after this. If the Talisman hits you, you’ll always have extra time to heal. The attack doesn’t work smoothly, so many ways that look like they should work aren’t reliable. You can dash through it, but the timing is tricky. Often, you might think you dashed through successfully, but then you suddenly appear next to Eigong and get hit by the Talisman. This happens when you dash too early. It’s frustrating, so it’s better not to try dashing through it. I also tested using the unbounded counter a lot while making this guide, but it never worked on this attack. If it is possible, the timing definitely doesn’t feel right.
The enemies you’ve faced before this boss probably made you used to fast fighting. But this fight, while having some quick attack combinations, is actually slower overall. You have more chances to use Triple Slash, Talisman, and heal than you might think at first. Because you’re used to faster fights, you might try to block attacks too early and take a lot of internal damage. Using the Breather Jade can help while you get used to this. The Reciprocation Jade isn’t very useful when you’re still learning because you probably won’t be able to use Unbounded Counter effectively yet. Remember, the Breather Jade is still useful even after you’ve learned the timings – it’s not just for beginners.
When you’re still learning the attack timings, the Water Flow spell style is a good choice. You can react quickly after using it, and it works well with the Breather Jade to help you recover from internal damage. Once you know the timings well, the Full Control spell style becomes very strong. You can actually use the 5-chi Talisman explosion a lot, but you need to be good at timing smaller explosions to use the spell well. When I used Water Flow style, the second part of the fight felt like it took a long time. If you prefer Water Flow and often reach the second part, try using the Hedgehog Jade or Reciprocation Jade to make your Talisman do more damage.
The time it takes for the Talisman to be ready again, the time to do a Triple Slash, and the time to heal once are all about the same. So once you have a way to deal with one of her attacks, you can use this to improve your strategy and make changes when needed. Also, applying a Talisman takes about the same time as one and a half slashes. When trying to improve your strategy, remember to think about how long it takes to jump or turn around if you need to do that to block an attack.
In this fight, you’ll be blocking a lot, so you’ll almost always have enough qi charges when using Water Flow style. Even with Full Control style, you’ll rarely run out in the first part of the fight. So, the main strategy is to use the talisman attack as much as you can. Don’t worry if the boss sometimes moves back when you try to use the talisman – you’ll get more qi charges soon. For the same reason, don’t worry about using the Focus Jade or Qi Blade Jade, especially with Water Flow style.
It might seem good to use the Immortal Dash to get closer and attack, but this can leave you unable to respond to her red attacks. Trying to use a talisman moves you forward about the same amount, and you can still use the Immortal Dash right after if needed. In the second part of the fight, trying to get closer might put you in fire, but it doesn’t hurt much.
For most attacks, Eigong decides which way to attack very late. It’s tempting to use the talisman to “dodge” to the other side and attack at the same time, but this is very hard to do. If you do it too early, she’ll turn and hit you. If you do it too late, you often can’t turn or jump in time to block the next attack.
Most of the red attacks give you time to use Unbounded Counter, often with plenty of time to prepare. But it’s important and difficult to remember what you just did – you might be stuck in an animation and not have time to use Unbounded Counter after. If you start a counter and then stop, you probably won’t have time to dodge. In the second part, the timing of the big red ball attack seems to change, so dodging sometimes isn’t possible. If you’re using Full Control style, Unbounded Counter becomes important in part two for getting enough qi charges.
In the third part (which only happens if you’re on the true ending path), you have fewer chances to use talismans and slashes. You might need to change your setup and strategy to do more internal damage, which the talisman can then use.
