No Man’s Sky – Crashed Ship Farming Guide

Farming Crashed Ships for Scrapping

With Charts: Purchase 6 or more emergency/distress signal maps (with Navigational Data) from a Cartographer at any space station, go to the planet of your choice, and begin to open the maps. If a map has the wrong type of location, DO NOT go there. Open the next map instead. If a map gives an error, continue to use until it finally gives something. Since there are only 6 types of distress signals, one of the maps will be the crashed ship you desire, even if it’s the last map.

There are two types of distress signal markers, one for a crashed ship with an NPC which you don’t want, and one with a crashed ship by itself, which you do. It’s best to get both types of markers before proceeding.

Once you have the markers, go to one of the distress signal markers. Try to circle from above and see if you notice an NPC down there; using photomode is beneficial for this. It is advised to go ahead and mark the NPC location with your visor or a save beacon (keep your distance on foot to not clear the POI), for easy avoidance in the future. Now, head to the good distress signal and claim your ship.

  • Finding the next crashed ship: Since you have all the wrong types of locations marked by map already, any new maps will only give you the location of a crashed ship able to be claimed. You need to continue to avoid the NPC crashed ship; you should have made a note of its location earlier.
  • With Exocraft: The Nautilon (submarine) can scan directly for underwater ships crashes, which never have NPC pilots. The Minotaur (exomech) can scan for distress signals, which include all 6 types the charts can find; however the Minotaur can only have one POI marked at a time. Both scanners have limited range, so move far away (30 seconds or so by ship) if you don’t find anything in the area.
  • Claiming and repairing your crashed ship: When claiming, you should make sure you have room to claim (own less than 12 ships). Once claimed you can get back into your functioning ship, you will be able to summon the crashed ship on your freighter or at the Space Anomaly. You may also utilize base building (or freighter teleport room) to get to a Space Station without repairing. Make a base then build a teleporter (or summon and return to your freighter) and make the wreck your active ship before teleporting to a station.

The value of the ship as shown in the HUD is not the value you will get from scrapping; you need to repair all of the cargo slots for that. Some may require harder to find materials than others; do the easy ones, only the cargo slots. Repairing tech slots does not add to the value.

Navigational Data

Nav data is used to purchase charts from the Cartographer onboard Space stations, or to summon your ship at landing pads and landing beacons.

You can find navigational data by looking on every space station and in planet side NPC buildings (such as Shelters) for yellow cubes, blue cubes or black discs which sit on tables and desks; check both sides of the station, vendor desks and the back rooms as well. Interact to get nav data or nanites. You can additionally get nav data or nanites from waypoints by buildings or at ancient data structures on some planets. Nav Data may also be sold by some component vendors at minor outposts, or at some galactic trade terminals.
