Peglin – The Forge Guide (Relic Choices and Strategies)

The Forge: Comprehensive Analysis of Relic Choices and Strategies

By Concentrication (and die).

The forge is one of the best relics in the game. It’s event can appear as early as forest, and the effect that it has means getting it in forest is the best time to get it, and with all the bad forest events, having this also be in forest makes event nodes in forest better. The forge makes it so that, whenever you take a non-level 3 orb, it gets upgraded one level and you take 4 damage. If you look at that even at the simplest form, just what’s written on the relic, it’s insane. And honestly, the deeper you analyze it, the better it gets.

Of course if you take every orb you see, you die to this relic, but realistically, you just take the orbs that you need, so this makes those orbs much better right away. 25 gold is worth more then 4 hp, too. If you’re low on hp, don’t take an orb! You can post battle heal if you need it still! Also, if you want an orb and want to top off your health, you can take the orb first, take the 4 damage, then heal to full health, if you want.

But also, you can negate the damage entirely! Ballwark and ballusion can both nullify the damage that you would take, and there can kind of be this snowball effect on balladin where you take an orb, it’s stats get higher because of the forge, you get more ballwark at the start of battle, then you can win faster because of the forge, letting you negate more forge damage. Overall, this relic is excellent at any point in the game, and is the default option in this event.

And then on the other side of the event, you have the modest mallet. The sprite for it is nice, but unfortunately the effect is just a negative. The mallet says that whenever you discard an upgradable orb, upgrade it until the end of combat and take one damage. It seems good if you’re in need of gold, but it really isn’t. The orbs that you want to keep are probably already upgraded, right? So the mallet doesn’t gain any value from discarding your good orbs, which you want to fire anyway, so it’s bad in that way. And then you want to get to those good orbs, so you discard your pebballs to get to them, and whenever you discard a pebball with this relic, you take one damage and upgrade it. You usually don’t want to fire pebballs anyway, so really the relic effect is “whenever you discard a pebball, take one damage.”

And to me, that doesn’t seem good. Why would I ever take that? It just harms me, and when the forge is the alternative, why would I ever take this? There’s no point to taking this. And no, highway orbbery is not a good synergy with this. Why would you want to discard your 7/14 or higher orb? Making a 7/14 into an 8/16 doesn’t change anything. Oboe doesn’t make this relic worth taking either. You should never take this. This is all downsides, no upsides.

This event can also help you if you need immediate damage! The forge gives delayed value, it doesn’t do anything when you take it, so if you are going to die, it doesn’t do anything. Luckily, this event also has something else takeable. There is an option where you can upgrade your orbs. The cost is 4 hp, +2 hp per upgrade you do. The upgrades are random, but this event can save you. The obvious usecase for this is if you know you’re dead against the wall, as against the wall this has almost no downside. In most other scenarios, you have to evaluate how much to upgrade. Do you take 10 damage? 28 damage? How many random upgrades until it stops being worth it? You usually only take this if you need damage or it’s late game. Healing is pretty important if you want to take more then two upgrades from this.

And then the leave option, never take it. You should almost always take the forge over leaving. You don’t lose anything from taking the forge. You don’t need to take orbs if you’re low, you can heal instead. If you don’t want the forge for some reason, you can upgrade a random upgrade or two! If you want to skip, you’re either very early (forge is really good) or very late (upgrades are decent). I would even say that mallet is better then skipping, but you shouldn’t be taking mallet anyway. If you get this event in mines, it’s probably best to take random upgrades, but if you get it before mines, always take the forge unless you die next floor due to a lack of damage.
