Weigh Station Fine / Item Surrender Avoidance

Weight problems in the game
When you enter a system, you might be asked to weigh your ship. If you’re over the weight limit, you have a problem. You can’t throw things away in space or sell them at a shop, or you’ll get a $1500 fine for littering. It’s strange that selling at a shop counts as littering, but those are the rules.
There’s also a game issue where if you’re overweight, the game forces you to give up cargo until you’re under 200kg. This happens even if you have permission to carry more weight. This often costs more than the fine would.
A way to fix it
I found a solution to this problem. The game saves automatically when you reach a weigh station, which is annoying. But I had an idea. The game might not save all the information about your cargo when you manually save.
So I tried something. I went to a shop, sold one fuel container to get under the weight limit, and then manually saved the game. When I loaded that save, the game had forgotten that I was supposed to be weighed at all.
Quick escape from weighing
We can use the fact that weigh stations activate when you get close to them. If your exit from the area is far enough from the weigh station, you can do this:
- Line up with the exit gate to the next area
- Save your game manually
- Load that save
- If you’re not asked to weigh in, quickly leave the area
This is useful if selling your cargo would lose you money, or if you have a trailer attached and don’t want to deal with unhooking it.
If the exit is close to the weigh station, this won’t work. You’ll need to reduce your weight instead.
TLDR
Strategy 1: Reduce weight
- When asked to weigh in, go to a shop
- Sell items until you’re within the weight limit
- Leave the shop and save manually
- Load that save
Strategy 2: Quick escape
- When asked to weigh in, check how far away the exit is
- If it’s far from the weigh station, go to the exit
- Save your game when lined up with the exit
- Load that save
- Quickly leave the area
