Sandbox Mode Guide
By FireManeDavy.
You’ve beaten the campaign, or you want to jump headfirst into sandbox mode for a traditional Survivalcraft experience. What is different? What should you know?
In campaign, your progression to areas is “scripted” and linear. In sandbox, it is not. You’ll find a number of different areas and room types not found in campaign. There are 4 levels (floors above) and 4 deeps (floors below). Think of each level and deep as their own maps.
How to Unlock X in Sandbox?
In sandbox, you will generally unlock things by:
- Rebuilding Great Forges
- Building new Hearths or Hammers
- Rebuilding Statues
- Building an upgrade to a workstation (forge bellows, gem cutter, etc)
- Finding a new material or gem
- Muznakan Tables and Rangers Camp Books
Where to Find X in Sandbox?
In my time playing sandbox, I have generally found that a good progression is for you to go from the 1st level to the 1st deep, to the 2nd deep, then back up to the 2nd level. But, in general:
- 1st Deep – will generally be a mines of moria type areas with copper and tin.
- 2nd Deep – can be the traditional deeps found in the campaign with ubusam wood, silver, rubies.
- 3rd or 4th deep will have your Troll King and potentially end game boss. You’ll probably find a mithril lode here too.
- 1st level – pretty standard. Westgate type areas and elven quarter. Potentially eastern bastion (a recommended later area). You’ll find iron, coal, and elven wood with the way out. There are crossroads as well.
- 2nd level – can be a mix of elven areas, Westgate areas, and bastion areas.
- 3rd and 4th level – more mixtures of the same with potentiality for mithril and nogrod forges.
This is not a concrete list. Generations can still be random. So make sure to explore.
Until the map has a feature where you can scroll up and down floors of a level or deep, try these:
- Utilize your waypoints. Mark areas with offshoots or confusing layouts. You can rename them too
- Mapstones are your friend and save you time. Rename your Mapstones to describe the area you’re teleporting to. Believe me, it is confusing if you don’t and end up having 10 Mapstones in an area that all say “Map Stone (Old Iron Mines) 1, 2, Or 3”.
- Come up with creative ways to mark areas you’ve explored already. Such as placing torches in specific spots. Or just wall off dead ends that you’ve completely mined with stone walls.
Will Defeating The War Chiefs Remove Hordes?
Short answer is no. You’ll always have to be mindful of the noise you make in areas in sandbox. You’ll always end up triggering hordes unless you turn down your difficulty settings or something.
Other tips: explore every crevice in sandbox and every offshoot even in stairs and descents. There are midway points at a lot of these that can be easily missed.
